Comment(s): We found two auction sales of comparable works to our example: "Homme a la pipe," pencil on paper, 9” x 6 5/8,” 1930, sold for $40,207 (€25,000) including premium at Christie’s London, South Kensington, 02/11/2011, lot #112; and “Portrait de Georges Hugnet,” mixed media (sanguine and pencil) on paper, 9 3/16” x 7,” 1930, Christie’s Paris, 12/01/2015, lot #131. Starting around 1911, Marcoussis was part of the Cubist movement alongside other avant-garde painters like Picasso, Braque, Juan Gris and those of the Section d'Or. His work was shown in exhibitions in many European cities as well as the United States. In 1925 he had his first solo exhibition in Paris. [30213-1-5000-NA]
