Very good condition; a few creases outside of the image upper right corner; a few handling dimples; else fine. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Cortez, Diego “Jean-Michel Basquiat 1981: The Studio of the Street,” New York: Jeffrey Deitch Projects, 2007, pg.57; Buchhart, Dieter (Editor), Nairne, Eleanor (Editor), Johnson, Lotte “Basquiat: Boom For Real,” Munich: Prestel, 2017, pg.147. Exhibition(s): Exhibited at “Basquiat: Boom for Real,” The Barbican Centre, London, September 2017 to January 2018. Collection(s): The Fales Library & Special Collections, New York University, New York. Provenance: From Bjorn Bengtsson Fine Art, Landskrona, Sweden, to our consignor:. Comment(s): Very rare, historic, early, and highly sought after Basquiat illustrated flyer to announce a performance by his band, Test Pattern (later renamed to Gray), at the much fabled downtown art space, “A’s", December 5th, 1979, 330 Broome Street, NYC. The only other impression for sale of this work that we could find as of May 19, 2022 was offered by Lot 180 Gallery, New York City, at $20,000. We could not find a record of the print at auction. A precursor to our example, Basquiat’s ink on paper drawing of the work (sans the copy of the cassette upper right and incorrectly dated to 1981), sold at Christie’s London, July 1, 2010, in their Post War and Contemporary Art Day Auction. In his “Jean-Michel Basquiat: A Biography” Eric Fretz writes: “Jean-Michel did all the posters [flyers] for his band. One of the early public performances was in December 1979 at A’s, a loft at 330 Broome Street. [The hand-drawn flyer for the gig] is done in his recognizable style, with strange arrows and notations added underneath. Some of the words are crossed out, and there is a dotted line of ink splashed through the middle of the page. A photocopied micro-cassette finishes off the look, suggesting some kind of sound, but not conventional music.” (Westport, Connecticut: ABC-Clio/Greenwood, 2010).
