Artist: Alexej Von Jawlensky (Russian/German, 1864-1941).
Title: "Heilandsgesicht: Madchenfopf".
Medium: Oil painting on paper.
Date: Composed c1918/19.
Dimensions: Overall size: 10 3/16 x 8 in. (259 x 203 mm). Image size: 10 3/16 x 8 in. (259 x 203 mm).
Lot Note(s): Signed with the monogram initials, lower right recto; signed (in the Artist's hand?) verso; collector ink stamps verso. Painted on cream wove paper. Overall condition good to very good; vertical buckling of the paper probably due to incorrect preparation (this and the curling of the paper could undoubtedly be conserved successfully) with associated vertical paint cracking; as it is the paper would easily flatten if matted and framed; pinholes in all four corners; minor paint cracks primarily in the subject’s eyeballs and right eyebrow. Provenance: If you have a genuine interest in bidding on this work kindly send an email to: [email protected] for provenance information and additional image(s). Comment(s): We found three auction sales of Jawlensky works comparable to our example: a sale of “Mystischer Kopf: Sphinx” for $329,059 (€245,000), oil on paper laid to board, 10 3/4” x 7 1/8,” 1917, at Griesbach, Berlin, November 24, 2011, lot #21; a sale of “Madchenkopf” for $612,500 including premium, oil on board, 7 1/8” x 5 1/2," c.1922, at Christie’s New York, 05/16/2018, lot #368; and "Heilandsgesicht: Martyrer” for $761,915 (£481,250) including premium, oil on linen finish paper laid to board, 12 3/4” x 10,” 1919, at Sotheby’s London, February 8, 2012, lot # 38. Jawlensky was a Russian expressionist painter active in Germany and was a key member of the New Munich Artist's Association (Neue Künstlervereinigung München), Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group and later the Die Blaue Vier (The Blue Four). In 1896 he moved to Munich, where he studied in the private school of Anton Azbe. In Munich Jawlensky met Wassily Kandinsky and various other Russian artists, contributing then to the formation of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München.
